I started out as a sound technician for a local band in
late 2000. Here I learned the basic skills that would help me as a DJ. I learned
about not only beat and rhythm, but also about setting up songs that flow well
together. I also learned about equipment, such as how to get the best sound out
of it, how to stop distortion, and what volumes are best for a room and event. I
learned how to fix the equipment, both before a gig at on the job. As a result I
can fix most problems with DJ equipment with out having any one notice there is
a problem.
In October 2003 I started with Russell Sound Lab. With in about 3 months I was
told I was ready to DJ solo gigs with the company, but I choose to continue
training for nearly a year. In this time I was able to work with multiple DJs,
seeing the styles and developing my own, and fine tuned my music selection. This
was also a chance to help fine tune my people skills. And I also learned how to
fix even more problems should they arise. Because of all this training I have
rarely had a major problem that I could not fix myself
For the next three years I did weddings, school dances, and private parties with
Russell Sound Lab (whom I am still with to this day). Then in summer of 2006 I
started at my first bar gig during the week. It was Handlebars and Hot Rods in
downtown Massillon. This was a short lived gig due to the bar closing after just
a few months. Shortly after that I started running karaoke at Thursday’s Lounge
in Akron. Originally as just a fill in, but when the main KJ returned she
decided that she no longer wanted to run karaoke and I was asked to take over. I
have been running that gig ever since, slowly improving it and adding new
features in such as Suicide Karaoke (A sing if he/she chooses my sing a
“suicide” song which is a random song chosen from that week’s theme) and later
layering the lyrics over the music videos.
Over the summer of 2007 I started work for a second mobile DJ company, Akron
Area DJs, who specialize in non-Top 40 weddings, specifically alternative rock
and other non-traditional wedding dance music. This gave me a chance to add yet
another style of DJing to my skills. I also did Fridays at Diezt’s Landing on
Portage Lakes. This gig only lasted the summer, and once the cold kicked in I
was no longer needed.
Currently I am still with Russell Sound Lab for the majority of my work, and
running karaoke at Thursday’s Lounge on Wednesdays. I am also doing work for
Akron Area DJs, and a few solo gigs such as Karaoke at Rolling Acres Cinema and
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (as cast leader and Brad Majors). Through Russell
Sound Lab I also do many school dances including reoccurring dances at St.
Paul’s in North Canton, St Patrick’s in Kent, St. Joan of Arc in Canton, and
Lake Middle in Hartville.
